Rodrick Thomas
Temple, TX
Excelsior College®, Associate of Science in Nursing
Rodrick Thomas chose to become a nurse thanks to both an interest in the profession and a family full of good examples. “I really enjoy helping people and I come from a background full of nurses, LVNs and RNs alike. It’s just something I felt like I wanted to do. And once I got into it I knew I was in the right place,” Rodrick said. “I’m really glad that I chose nursing as a profession because I have touched so many people in my line of work.”
The most surprising things about Rodrick? “My experience ranges from ER to geriatrics to pediatrics even, so I have a pretty good mixture of things. With that, you’d probably think I’ve been a nurse for a long time, I’ve only been a nurse for a little over a year.”
Rodrick’s experience with The College Network’s help was positive since it helped him make his dreams come true. “The College Network® has been pretty awesome. I really enjoy studying at home as opposed to the classroom. I get to work full time and if I’m at work and there’s a lull or anything like that I can study at work. It’s just absolutely convenient for me.”
The College Network’s modules were also a benefit in helping Rodrick learn the material without being too overwhelming. “The modules themselves particularly are pretty informative. They’re pretty in depth but they don’t talk over my head. And I think that’s really convenient. I don’t have to call people and ask them “what does this mean” or whatever, because the module is pretty explanatory,” he said. “The tests themselves are multiple choice format and that’s really helpful also to me because that’s what I’m used to.”
Most nurses are especially nervous about going to the testing center, but Rodrick was already familiar with the process. “Going to the testing center actually wasn’t bad. It was the way I took my NCLEX, actually, the same format,” Rodrick said. “I went up there and I showed them my ID. They checked me in, sat me at the computer and I just went from there.”
