Scott Mitchell had a lot of sales and marketing experience, but no professional qualifications for his new HR role. “I wanted to understand the lingo and basic discussions that were going on in the department,” Scott said. “Getting my certificate in human resources from eCornell enabled me to sound and feel much more professional in my business surroundings. My job involved connecting HR things in the HR department both regionally and globally.”

Scott’s education began as simply as an Internet search one afternoon when an advertisement for The College Network® popped up on his screen. “The timing for me was perfect. Don’t get me wrong, it was unrelenting since I took several classes back-to-back-to-back in a very short period,” Scott said. “Every week I had to sit down and plan out the next week. I needed to make sure I spent plenty of time learning the material and time studying it.

It wasn’t that he didn’t have other things going on at the same time. “I’m married with two kids and was still working full time, so I had to just make time to study when I could,” Scott said. “I squeezed studying in during the day, on weekends and in the evening whenever I could.”

As for his experience, Scott is pleased. “I’m very satisfied with the results of my education. My certificate reinforces my professional standing and I’m more comfortable in my position now. I would absolutely earn my certificate through eCornell again.”

When asked what advice he would offer to others considering the step to advancing their education, Scott says, “Like all things, you need to be committed. You need to WANT to do it. If you don’t participate, you won’t get the full value of what you’re paying for,” he said. “Ultimately, you get out of it what you put into it
