Regis University, RN to Master of Science in Nursing

“Online is definitely easier for someone who is extremely busy,” said Barbara Moose of earning her degree through distance learning. Barbara is certainly busy–she’s a divorced mother of five, a grandmother of six, and works two jobs.

“Waiting for an easier time to earn your degree is nice, but you have to trust that you can do it,” said Barbara. “Don’t doubt yourself. Organize your time. Give yourself deadlines to accomplish each module.” Since starting the program, Barbara has completed seven courses toward earning her Master of Science in Nursing.

Barbara was a stay-at-home mother for 15 years but always wanted to try nursing. She first went to school to be a nurse’s aide. She earned her RN license in 2001 while working full time as a unit clerk in a hospital emergency room.

She now teaches nursing skills at Alfred State College, and her job required her to have her Bachelor of Science in Nursing within five years. She chose The College Network® and Regis University after meeting with a Program Advisor. “I really liked the sequence of the program,” said Barbara. “Everything was mapped out very concisely. It made it so simple for me to get excited because there was a plan already in place for me. And I wanted to keep the job that I liked, so I had to get started.”

“I fell into teaching,” said Barbara. “I never expected to be a teacher, but one of the instructors at Alfred State College encouraged me, and I’m very happy with the decision. I realized I love teaching and wanted to keep teaching.” Barbara completed her BSN in two years and will complete her MSN in one year. She also works as a lab coordinator in the nursing department.

Barbara found that taking two classes at a time was overwhelming and enjoyed focusing on just one at a time. She also found it helpful to schedule her exams and to organize her studying around that date. “The test schedule motivated me,” said Barbara.

“My degree has given me much more versatility in the workforce,” Barbara said. “Many places require a BSN and my BSN enabled me to keep the job I really like. It’s given me self-esteem, helped me advance in my workplace and shown me a broader view of nursing. The MSN has helped me understand nursing education and how curriculum is guided by the National League for Nursing. This has broadened my view of nursing and the process of education.”

Barbara also appreciated Regis University’s approach. “I really like their background theory of being a nurse and a good steward in society.”
