Kathy Phillips
Sacramento, CA
Indiana State University, LVN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing

“I was an LVN, and I really felt like I wanted more of a challenge,” Kathy Phillips said of her decision to return school. "I was working two jobs, 50 hours a week. The traditional classroom setting simply didn’t work for me.”

Kathy chose to pursue her Indiana State University degree through The College Network®. “I had to work, so distance learning worked for me,” she said. It wasn’t feasible to sit in a classroom at a certain time. I wanted an online nursing program so that I could work and go to school. The College Network’s online program seemed to fit my busy schedule.”

“I studied after work, evenings, and on weekends. It was a busy and full schedule, but I wanted to get done as quickly as I could, so I took a full load of classes. I love to learn and enjoyed the challenge of discovering new information and research.” Kathy said. “Organization is very important. Going back to school forced me to be organized. I became a list-maker. I started early on making lists of what needed to be achieved each week.”

Since earning her BS in Nursing degree and RN license, Kathy has taken on tremendous responsibility working for a school district with 12,000 students and 15 schools. Her days are busy, but she wanted that challenge and is happy to have it. "I have a new job that has doubled my salary from what I was making before. But more than that, I have a job that is much more challenging and rewarding. I’d like to stay right where I’m at. I like giving back to the community. But, I will probably pursue my master’s degree for additional job security.”
