Indiana State University, LPN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing
“I came to the United States in June of 2002. In 2005, I got into the LPN program in California. I got out of that in 2006. Then, in 2007, I moved down to Colorado. I don’t know who gave my name to The College Network®, but I got a call. Of course, I was looking at getting into school and trying to continue from where I was at. He sat down at my house and we talked about it. I decided that I would be able to do it, so I signed up. Then, he handed me the first two modules: Psychology and Sociology. If I remember, it took me about two months to do the first module because it was my first. Before I knew it, I had done about 17 modules all by myself. Throughout all these courses, I’ve never stepped in a classroom, and I got all my credits. And now, I’m happy to say that I’m now enrolled with Indiana State University. In the spring, I’m going to start doing the first two classes with the school.
"For anybody who is anticipating trying to do something like this, I don’t think it’s too hard. It all depends on time. You have to have time and you have to have a purpose to go ahead, not letting anything come in your way. You have to have time for fun and time for family, but you have to stay focused. Every day, you have to stay on course. You get your modules, and you have to stay focused. Whatever time you get, you go ahead and you read something. Before you know it, you are done. I never thought I could have reached this level. It’s been about three years now. I started in 2007, and I have 52 credit hours to finish the BSN now.
"Everybody can do it. Just call The College Network up and then sign up, and before you know it, you are done. Some people are saying, ‘My kids have to grow up before I start doing that.’.You can still do it and have a family. I have family here and also in Africa. I have all these issues, but I’m still pressing on. I’m not even thinking about stopping. I think I can go up to the next level. So, that’s my story. Everybody can do it. It’s terrific. It truly has helped me. I think it’s something that is worth sacrificing for. I’m pretty much sure that I’m going to reap the benefits.
"I don’t want to be just a nurse; I want to be the best. I’ve never done anything in nursing before coming to the U.S. When I came here, everything I had to do was new to me. I decided to do this, and I put in the effort. Maybe some day I can go home and help the folks over there. My purpose is just to be as useful as I can be. I just want to go up so I can be able to help others who are in need. With this level, I can help people but not as much as an RN. With all the avenues and opportunities out there with a BSN, it will be much better than where I am at right now.”
