Lindsey Dewing
Fishers, Indiana
Excelsior College®, Associate of Science in Nursing
“Becoming an RN has been a lifelong dream,” said Lindsey Dewing of earning her Associate of Science in Nursing from Excelsior College® and her RN license. “I had a friend when I was a sophomore in high school who was diagnosed with cancer. I spent time with him in the hospital, and it really opened my eyes to healthcare. When he passed away, I knew that I wanted to do something that made a difference.”
Lindsey, a hospital staff nurse, worked for seven years as an LPN before earning her RN license. “The roles of LPN and RN are similar, but as an RN, you have more responsibility and more pay,” said Lindsey.
She earned her degree and RN license while working full time. “It was the only option for me. I needed to work full time. I’m so glad The College Network® is available for people like me,” said Lindsey.
Lindsey had attended college after high school but didn’t graduate. “I felt that I was more focused and determined earning my degree now than I was right after high school.”
The online environment was new to her. “I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. The material was straightforward and user friendly. And while reading the learning modules, I realized that I had a good base of knowledge from my work experience.”
“I really liked that I could do the coursework during my free time, at my own pace,” said Lindsey, who passed nine courses. She is married and is expecting her first child soon, so she’s glad to have finished her program. “It’s a big relief, a big weight off of my shoulders. I will earn more money, have more options and more respect.”
“I really like the patients—that’s my favorite part of nursing—and I like the fast pace and rewarding work. I enjoy learning and I learn all the time at work,” said Lindsey. “I think the program is a great opportunity for working nurses. You really can go back to school.”
