Determined Student Saves Money by Transferring Older Credits
Peter Brooks wanted to become a nurse for job security, a challenging career, and to help people. “I have always enjoyed helping people. I had three friends who were nurses and I liked their schedules, their income, and a couple of them were travelers so that appealed to me too. I like the flexibility and security. There is never a shortage of nursing jobs, and as you transfer from one type of nursing to another, it’s like several different careers in one,” Peter said.
Peter had credits to transfer from the late 80s and early 90s. Most colleges wouldn’t take his credits, which meant he would have had to take them over — costing him time and money. With The College Network and Regis University, his credits were accepted. “It was very easy. As it turns out, I only needed to take two non-nursing courses,” he said.
With high hopes for his career, Peter is looking forward to earning his Bachelor of Science in Nursing in August and his Master of Science in Nursing by the end of 2011. “I am looking to make myself more marketable, and since The College Network® accepted all of my transfer credit and allowed me the ability to work and take classes, I knew it would be a good fit. When I earn my BSN, my resume will look more polished and I’ll be able to earn a little more money. When I earn my MSN, I will be able to teach, which is what I’ve always wanted to do. I think I will still work part time in a hospital setting to keep my skills fresh and maintain credibility as a nurse.”
For students just starting out, Peter offers this advice, “Don’t be afraid. You’ll learn the software, you’ll find that extra hour or two a day, and you’ll have lots of help from classmates and instructors. Just take the risk and move forward in life!”
