Rebecca Hood
Starkville, MS
Excelsior College®, Associate of Science in Nursing
The choice to be a nurse was an easy one for Rebecca Hood. “I’ve always wanted to be a nurse. In seventh grade, we had to dress up as what we wanted to be and I dressed up as a nurse. I wanted to help people and take care of people, so that’s what I’ve decided to do,” she said.
Finding The College Network® at the right time really worked out for Rebecca. “I got online and found The College Network. The program advisor came out and talked to me. He was really nice. I felt like it was something that I could do,” she said. “I didn’t like sitting in the classroom all day when I could sit down and figure it out by myself in the book.”
Rebecca worked out a system to working with the Comprehensive Learning Modules™ quickly. “I always would order the book. I go through and highlight and make myself note cards. I do the questions on the computer. That helped me a lot. I would buy the Excelsior® tests and do those. That helped me too,” she said. “It was a lot easier to me than going to LPN school. Of course, I didn’t know anything when I went to LPN school. I work in the hospital so I see it all every day. So when I sit down and read the book, I just put it together. It was a lot easier for me.”
Rebecca’s advice to students not studying is simple: “If you don’t study, you aren’t going to pass the test. That’s just the way it is. You’re just wasting money so there’s no point. Try to take a couple hours every day to sit down and look at it. Study over it. Read over it because those tests are not easy. They’re not just going to just give you a grade. It’s worth it though.”
Now that she’s on her way, Rebecca can’t wait to start seeing the payoff of her hard work. “I would like to be an RN because there are more job opportunities. I could make more money. Most of the time I felt like I was doing their job anyway so I might as well get paid for it,” she said. “I just always wanted to be an RN.”
